"A quiet night in the batteries - a sketch in the Greenhill battery (Major Chapman's), 29th Jan[uar]y. 1855"
An illustration of the Crimean War by noted special war artist William Simpson (1823-1899). William Simpson was sent to the Crimea specifically to produce illustrations for
The Illustrated London News. As Simpson was a very good artist, but the demands of newspaper printing required a very fast turnover - and this in a time where all illustrations had to be prepared by hand - this more "deluxe" edition of his artwork came out a few months later.

[link] I think this restoration was fairly quick - call it four hours. A lot of the fixes on a good scan like this one are small but numerous: dirt, hairs, small tears, rogue ink blobs, that sort of thing. Not sure how much of that shows up at smaller sizes, since the colour fixes are easier to notice.
The next deviation I'm going to upload is the companion piece.
