Gettysburg

You marched into the starry night,
prepared for war beneath the moon.
You always fought for what you believed to be right,
knowing death could come to you soon.

Morning arrives and brings the sun,
and you are prepared to fire at blue.
You gaze down the barrel of your borrowed gun,
for every shot you take brings freedom closer to you.

Across the field, your brother sees
a Confederate boy behind stone.
But you take aim and fire through the trees,
and now that Union boy is gone.

At the battle's end, one soldier finds another...
a Union boy, shot in the heart...
and beside him lays your brother.

Restoration notes
Fairly standard stuff. Dirt, tears, smudges, colour, all that sort of thing fixed. Scan provided by the Library of Congress.

Copyright status
Without repeating things I've said a thousand times by now, this is a pre-1923 American work by Thure de Thulstrup (1848-1930), and hence the original is out of copyright. As a British citizen, I can claim a copyright on the restoration, but, really, just credit me for it.
