Description

Still working on these in between working on the big restoration, because I like the idea of completeness (not that I'll get strict completeness - I think the Library of Congress is missing a few of the cards)

As before, this illustration is by Sidney Hall, for the 1825 book "A familiar treatise on astronomy" by Jehoshaphat Aspin. Original, uncleaned scan from the Library of Congress. [link]

Most of the constellations in this one either do not exist anymore, or are renamed. So, quickly:

Taurus Poniatowski: No longer exists.
Serpentarius: Old name for Ophiuchus.
Scutum Sobiesky: Now shortened to "Scutum". The only constellation created for political purposes still recognised, albeit with the name of King John III Sobieski of Poland no longer included.
Serpens: Still goes by that name

Not illustrated, but named:

Antinous: the Roman Emporer Hadrian's catamite. Now part of Aquila.
Cerberus: A rather strange variant of the beast, replacing the golden apples Hercules was traditionally considered to be holding. Remerged into Hercules.
Mons Mænalus: The mountain which Boötes stands on. Now part of Boötes.

Other notes: Serpentarius, lipstick doesn't suit you. And get that missing part of your leg checked. (This is a clean-up of historical art, and I didn't want to fix Sidney Hall's slips, only all the staining which covered this one.)
