Restoration and cleanup of ''The Battle at La Hogue'', by Benjamin West (1738-1820) and William Woollett (1735-1785). It probably shows the events of 24 May 1692, when the British sailors rowed in and torched the French ships, and is dedicated to the "Right Honourable the Lord Grosvenor", who apparently commissioned the painting this is based on.
The Battle of La Hogue was one of the decisive battles in the Nine Years' War, a French-English war with a side of Hanoverian-Stuart struggles over the English throne. The Hanoverian English won.
This is one of the images from my backlog, before I started uploading these to DeviantArt, I think it was about 10 hours to clean this - there were rips and stains and such - though this is part of a backlog I have, so I can't really remember. The original scan is from the Library of Congress. [link]
